The city of Carlisle and its nearby regions boast a wide variety of attractions designed to appeal to every age group and interest. Known as the Border City, Carlisle serves as the central hub for commerce, industry, and retail across northern Cumbria and parts of southern Scotland. The area’s roots go back to Roman times, when a settlement was founded to support nearby forts along Hadrian’s Wall. During the 1100s, King Henry I permitted the formation of a religious institution here, which evolved into a diocese, elevating the priory to cathedral status.
Adjacent to the Cathedral stands the historic Prior’s Tower, which now hosts a modest exhibit within its medieval pele tower. Overlooking the city for more than 900 years, Carlisle Castle remains a formidable fortress from the Middle Ages. This historic site also houses the Border Regiment Museum, where visitors can trace the legacy of the local infantry forces, including the Border Regiment, the King’s Own Royal Border Regiment, and local militias.
Due to its advantageous location, Carlisle flourished in the 1800s as a railway powerhouse. The city became a critical junction where seven distinct railway companies converged at the impressive Carlisle Citadel Station and its sprawling freight yards. Built in 1847 by Sir William Tite, the station today marks the northern terminus of the legendary 72-mile Settle-Carlisle Railway. Steam locomotives are still a regular sight during special heritage trips.
Tullie House, which began life as a private home in the 17th century, has been extensively expanded and transformed into one of the most distinguished regional museums in the UK. Another gem is the Guildhall Museum, nestled in the upper floor of Carlisle’s only surviving medieval house. Constructed in 1407, it once served as the meeting place for the city’s eight trade guilds during the Middle Ages.
Constructed in 1778, St Cuthbert’s Church, located near the Market Place, stands as the city’s main parish church. Next to it is the Tythe Barn—now the church hall—believed to have been built between 1485 and 1507. After years of neglect, it has been carefully restored and now serves as a popular venue for exhibitions.
Bothergate, once the original southern gateway into Carlisle, underwent two major reconstructions—first in the 1500s and then again in the 1800s. Its 19th-century replacement features two imposing towers, collectively known as the Citadel. These were designed by famed architects Thomas Telford and Sir Robert Smirke to function as courts and a prison. Today, the West Tower is open for public tours. Smirke also designed the elegant bridge that spans the River Eden.
